Back in the golden haze of Autumn of 2018, Debbie and Paul approached us to help optimise their cramped and dated kitchen by adding a classic side return extension to their elegant Victorian home in Cambridgeshire.
We were tasked with creating a light-filled contemporary room that made the most of the available space to the side of the house and that would provide the couple with a large convivial kitchen:dining environment to make the most of views out to their garden.
Critical to the brief was a space that worked well for Debbie and Paul for their day to day lives, but which would also be a sociable space for when the couple’s grown up children, family and friends visit. The couple were also looking to create a relaxing reading room.
By re-using the original bricks from the house, The English Listed architectural team conceived the idea of using structural glazing for the full length of the new extension, that appears to gently float above the new external wall, filling the room with light and allowing a wonderful view of the changing sky above. Glazing, supplied by Elyzien Doors and Windows in corten steel, runs across the rear of the extension now, letting light pour into the space and allowing the limestone floor to seamlessly run from inside to out for the patio.
A clean, modern aesthetic that fitted the Victorian period of the home was established as the overarching design direction. The focus for the kitchen design was opening up an original fireplace that had been partly bricked up to form a focal point. The English Listed interior designer team selected a contemporary shaker style kitchen, with a large island as the centrepiece. Brass detailing for handles and taps adds a contemporary touch and sits beautifully with the quartz worktop. Smart contemporary lighting include architectural spots to illuminate the structural glazing, and more industrial touches such as the enamelled metal pendants that hang above the island and the anthracite metal wall lights.
A cosy but elegant ‘snug/reading room’ was stylishly updated using a Little Greene Paint Company green and new solid wooden floors, topped off with an over-sized bronze pendant, and we even squeezed in a contemporary cloakroom.
